About The Sign and Print Centre
Founded by our now Company Chairman Andy Fearn, we have operated from the same premises based in the centre of Derby since the mid Eighties. Today we have developed into one of the leading Sign Making & Digital Printing Companies in the area.
From the early days of traditional signwriting by hand we have kept abreast of technological advancements within the sign industry. We were the first company in Derby to produce Computer-cut Self Adhesive Vinyl Graphics on our "All Singing, All Dancing" Apple Computer Design Station. No colour monitors back then though, everything was done on a green screen. Logos were digitised to put them into the computer, until we eventually purchased a black and white hand scanner at great expense! It was a hard job educating the public that Vinyl was going to be the lettering medium of the future, but we got there in the end! Our Design Department today looks like something out of Starship Enterprise in comparison.
Next came computers with coloured screens and flatbed scanners which totally transformed the way we designed and made signs and we could easily produce our own typesetting for our screenprinting department too. We advanced from hand screen benches to automatic screen printing machines and then Pow!.. everything went digital. We took the bold step back then in the nineties, in the throes of a recession to invest or gamble in a Large Format Digital Printer. Our first job was for a large firm of accountants who wanted various walls wallpapering with trendy designs. That confirmed to us that Digital Imaging was now going to be the future of the Sign and Graphics industry.
The next advancements came thick and fast with the internet, inkjet printable waterproof solvent inks, print and cut to shape on the one machine, and now we are first to have the biggest flatbed printer in the area. Printing 8 feet wide it enables us to print directly onto virtually any substrate and it will print a full 8 foot by 4 foot board in about 12 minutes. Oh, and it comes out dry and ready to fit! But that was a few years ago now and things are advancing all the time in our industry, and as we pride ourselves on keeping on the pulse, watchout for the future...
